The state of affairs at the country’s municipalities has once again come under the spotlight, following Auditor-General Tsakani Maluleke’s briefing to parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the Standing Committee on the Auditor General – on the past financial year’s municipal audit outcomes and COVID-19 municipal expenditure. The AG reported that municipalities have incurred irregular expenditure of R26 billion in the 2019/20 financial year.
