The COMPACT programme held a Stakeholder Engagement on 14 September 2023 in Johannesburg and online. It was great to be in the same room together and to learn and share from each another on issues around participation, planning and accountability in SA.

The overall aim of the COMPACT Stakeholder Engagement was to bring together all participating municipalities and other stakeholders to jointly reflect on the overarching findings from Phase 1 of the action research, with a particular focus on the implications of the relevant recommendations for each stakeholder.

The objectives of the engagement were to:

  • Provide a platform for robust engagement on the findings from the action research conducted in phase 1 of the project which targeted the experiences and perspectives of Mayors, Speakers, Municipal Managers, ward and PR councillors, municipal senior managers, officials, and ward committee members.
  • Share the recommendations and best practices of phase 1 as thought leadership insights for municipalities, sector departments and other non-state actors.
  • Solicit inputs from various perspectives into the development and design of a toolbox to enhance public participation.
  • Initiate advocacy work at the national level and dissemination of research findings, lessons, practice notes, and tools to local government stakeholders nationally through networks.
