Marcus comes to PARI from Brown University, having recently defended his doctoral dissertation in Political Science entitled ‘Resources & Recourses: The Origins of Entitlement in Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa’. His research focuses on the history and normative frameworks of claims-making in Africa, particularly in regards to public goods and social protection. Marcus is currently working on protests and popular conceptions of rights, as well as the politics of housing in South Africa. Before starting graduate work at Brown, he lived in Cairo, Egypt as a Fulbright Scholar (2010–2011). Marcus received his B.A. in Near Eastern studies from Washington University in St. Louis (2010) and is an avid fan of Arsenal Football Club.
