Just Access: The Real Transition is a 10-part documentary-style audio podcast that examines the deep social, economic and political implications of South Africa’s Just Transition. As South Africa moves towards renewable energy, the transition risks repeating old patterns of exclusion. This podcast makes the case that true justice begins with access: to land, to services, to decision-making and to opportunity.

The series weaves together the different facets of the transition drawing from PARI’s extensive research on service delivery, land governance, state reform and political dynamics. Through interviews with leading PARI researchers by our host, Tasneem Essop (Society, Work and Politics Institute), the series will present policy critique, grounded research and personal testimony to paint a realistic picture of what a just transition could look like.

Just Access: The Real Transition is created for policymakers, researchers, activists and citizens alike; this podcast both challenges and empowers listeners with new insights into one of the most important transformations facing South Africa today.

Produced by Richard Rumney in collaboration with the Public Affairs Research Institute (PARI).

Episode 1 releases on 17 February 2026.
