Municipal Performance Management
Performance management, at all levels of the accountability value chain, should be taken seriously in municipalities through the provision of sufficient information and support to councillors and municipal staff. COMPACT and SALGA’s Performance Management Unit have developed the Municipal Performance Management Technical Digest which provides information on performance management in local government to councillors and municipal employees, encouraging community monitoring of performance by providing examples of where municipalities are undertaking this.
SALGA has developed a comprehensive guide for operationalising performance management in local government, as well as a video on performance management training.

In 2021 the South African Cities Network (SACN) developed a report and video called Rules of the Game: What Rules Government Urban Practitioners in Your City, which provides insights on municipal performance management systems in South African cities.
